How to transfer your Okta verification to a new phone

Tis the season to …. receive a new phone?  If you do get a new phone keep in mind you will want to set it up with Okta Verify BEFORE you discard or erase the old phone.    Doing an iCloud or direct phone to phone transfer of data and apps doesn’t transfer the authentication for Okta.

There are several ways to transfer the authentication:

If you have the old phone use a computer to log in to sso.williams.edu.  In the upper right where your name is click Settings.  Click Set up another and add your new phone.  Note that you don’t need cell service (or even wifi) on the old phone to do this.  You can enter a code from the Okta Verify app on the old phone even if it is not connected.  This is useful in the case where the new phone has the new cell number already.

OR

On the old phone open Okta Verify, click your account and choose Add Account to Another Device.  You can then transfer the authentication via bluetooth.

IF you get stuck and can’t transfer or you no longer have the old phone, don’t worry.  Faculty and Staff can email [email protected]  from your Williams email (if you are still logged in) or from your secondary email of record (usually this is your personal email) and we’ll contact you.  Students can email [email protected]

Thanks for thinking ahead and supporting the security of your accounts and the college.
