Data Privacy Day

Data Privacy Day (DPD) is an annual international event held each year on January 28th to promote awareness about the many ways personal information is collected, stored, used, and shared. It is also an opportunity to provide education about privacy practices that will enable individuals to protect their personal information. It has many champions who partner with the National Cyber Security Alliance by educating their customers, citizens, employees and communities through events, activities and other methods.

Williams OIT is registered as a 2019 #PrivacyAware Champion.  For Data Privacy Day 2019 we recommend checking, utilizing and setting up several things:

  1. Set up 2-step authentication wherever possible. At Williams this is done from google.com/2step  . Apple, PayPal and most likely your banking sites also encourage you to set up 2-step authentication.
  2. Use a different password for every site. Don’t let a breach at Facebook or LinkedIn compromise your Williams account! You can easily have different passwords by using a password manager like LastPass or Valt
  3. Check your privacy settings in Facebook and other online media
  4. Check whether your offsite accounts have ever been compromised by checking  https://haveibeenpwned.com/  If you need help interpreting the results from this site, ask us.
