Digital Storytelling, stories from the Spring 2007 digital storytelling workshop. Come see stories by Bernice, Lewis, Chuck Paquette, Bob Scherr, and others, and hear about the workshop process. Digital Storytelling is a practical way to learn how to use video to communicate information effectively, and cover the full range of the process from the conceptual to the technical. The next workshop will be held March 18 - 20, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.. Workshops are open to faculty and staff. Email itech@williams.edu for more information.

Polling All Students: Classroom Polling System Lunch.
Professor Steve Swoap used a classroom polling system that integrates with PowerPoint in his Physiology class in the spring. Data collection and graphing happens live during class. Come see a demo and hear about how Steve uses polling in his teaching.

Second Life: Teaching the impossible
Over the summer Christopher Bolton, assistant professor of Japanese and Comparative Literature, worked with the students and staff of the Williams Instructional Technology program to build a virtual 3D museum that highlights core principles of manga and animae discussed in the classroom. Please join us in the Faculty House Lounge on Wednesday, noon, for a presentation of the museum, and a discussion of the potential uses for online virtual worlds in education and the rewards of presenting manga and animae in Second Life. Thursday, 3/1 "Introduction to Social Software in Education", Bryan Alexander of NITLE
Social software tools such as weblogs and wikis are open, collaborative environments for writing and knowledge sharing. When used in the classroom, social software has the potential to foster new social patterns, enhance community, and expand the critical audience for student writing. This lunch talk will offer an introduction to social software in education, examining specific pedagogical considerations and some best practices. Bryan Alexander is the Director of Research for the NITLE organization, of which Williams is a member.

Wednesday, 3/14 "Tools for Teaching" Faculty including Ronadh Cox, Dieter Bingemann, Ernest Brown, Ed Gollin, and Bob Gazzale will talk about technology tools for teaching ranging from using the iPod in class to custom made applications and interactive PowerPoint slides.

Thursday, 4/19 "Google Earth and Google Maps in the Liberal Arts Classroom", with Sharron Macklin, OIT, and Jenni Lund, Wheaton College. Google Earth gives casual users a richly visual, instantly engaging, easily navigated view of the world. Point-and-click simplicity means instructors can casually add geographical experiences to their courses. The presenters will describe experiences from different campuses, using Google Earth and Google Maps in the classroom, in a range of disciplines, fulfilling a range of educational objectives.
Wednesday, 11/15 "Old Shorelines on the Gulf of California", by Markes Johnson and Dave Backus.
Zoom around the Baja California peninsula in a helicopter, or by using videos created from satellite images. The goals and logistics for a new field season can be decided well in advance on the basis of videos made from satellite images. Markes Johnson and Dave Backus will speak about creating the videos, exploring the ancient shores, and their plans for January, 2007. Wednesday, 11/1 "ChemCasts", podcasting by Dieter Bingemann
"ChemCasts - teaching chemistry via iPods." Our students are severely overcommitted. Talk while you walk, IM with three friends at once, do your homework while you wait for your part in the theater rehearsal, or listen to your iPod while you work out in the gym. WIT 2006 produced nine episodes of a podcast which Dieter integrated into the first section of his introductory chemistry course this fall. He will present an overview of the process, its challenges, student responses, and conclusions from his first experience with this new medium. Thursday, 10/19, Realizing an Animated Musical Score for a Medieval Mass by Jacob Obrecht
Prof. Bloxam has been working through the FCMT and with WIT to build an electronic educational resource that will make vivid the cultural context and compositional details of an extraordinary polyphonic Mass composed in 1487 by Obrecht for a fur merchant in Bruges. The project incorporates a web site, an animated score, and even a recreation of the original liturgical ceremony. This lunch will focus on the creation of the animated score as well as some elements of the website.

Gail Newman will discuss how digital storytelling functions for the incoming first-years in the Summer Humanities and Social Sciences program. Janneke van de Stadt will talk about her experience using digital storytelling in the foreign-language classroom and discuss some of the medium's linguistic, compositional, and creative applications.
