To set up your Google account in Mac Mail for the first time

If this is the first time you’re connecting an account to Apple Mail select “Google” and add your username (username@williams.edu and password), there rest is pretty much automatic.

For help in troubleshooting your current settings we have the specific account settings below:

Configure Gmail with Apple Mail for Mac OS X 10.9 and later

Select Mail and then click Add Account.

For Account Type, select Add Other Mail Account. Then click Continue.

Fill in your name and Email address, and Password  where prompted.

Click Create.

If a pop-up displays indicating that “More information is required,” click Next.

Fill in the following information, then click Next:

Account type: IMAP
Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
User Name: Email Address (example: username@williams.edu)
Password
Under Incoming Mail Server Info, select the “Use SSL” check box, and change Authentication to Password.

If the window after this indicates that “Additional account information is required,” click Next

Fill in the following information, then click Next:

SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
User Name: Williams Email Address
Password

If a pop-up displays indicating that “More information is required”, click Next.

Check the box next to “Use SSL”, and change the port to 465
Change the authentication type to Password, then click Next.
Your Williams Gmail is now configured in Apple Mail.

Configure Gmail with Apple Mail for Mac OS X 10.8

To set up Gmail on Apple Mail for OS X 10.8, complete the following steps:

Under the Mail menu, select Preferences > Mail menu

Click the Accounts icon.

Click the + symbol in the bottom left corner of the window.

Enter your full name as you would like it to appear on emails sent from this account.

Enter your email address and password.

Click Continue.

Enter the following server settings:

Select IMAP from the Account Type drop-down menu.

Enter a description that will help you identify this account (e.g. Williams Gmail) in the Description field.

Enter imap.gmail.com in the Incoming Mail Server field.

Enter your email user name (username@williams.edu) in the User Name field.

Enter your password

Click Continue.

Note: You may receive an error at this point indicating that you may not be able to receive mail. Click Continue.

Enter the following server settings:

Enter a description that will help you identify your account in the Description field.

Enter smtp.gmail.com in the Outgoing Mail Server field.

Check the Use Authentication checkbox. Your username (username@williams.edu) and password should populate automatically, if not add them here.

Verify your information is correct, then click Create

After you click Create, you will be taken back to the Accounts window. If you are not taken there automatically, click Mail › Preferences, or by hitting Command + on your keyboard.

Click the Account Information tab.

Select Edit SMTP Server List from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop-down menu.

Highlight the Williams Gmail Outgoing server you just created and select the Advanced tab.

Enter the following settings:

Select the Use default ports (25, 465, 587) radio button.

Click the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) checkbox.

Select Password from the Authentication drop-down menu.

Click OK.

Enter your login information:

Username: username@williams.edu

Password

Your email should now be successfully configured to send and receive mail. If you are taken to the Accounts window, close the window and return to Apple Mail. Click Save if prompted to apply any changes.
