Blackboard GLOW Definition
Item Availability Resource/Activity Eye In Blackboard, an item is available to students when the availability option is set to “Yes” under the modify button. Glow uses the open/closed Eye symbol by each resource/activity.
Item Resource/Activity In Glow, an item can be a course resource or a student activity. A resource is any material created by the instructor for instructional delivery and an Activity is learning interaction completed by the student.
Grade book Grades Assignments in Glow are automatically entered into the grades.
Discussion Board Forums The Forums in Glow are much more intuitive than the Blackboard Discussion Board and are RSS enabled.
Assignments Assignments This serves as a place for students to view/complete assignments.
Course Documents Resources In Blackboard, course documents serves as a place to store course materials & assignments. In Glow, this only stores course content.
Chat Activities> Chat Chat features are similar in both.
Add Item Resource> Add a Web page Lets your create a page of information (lecture notes, instructions, etc)
N/A Resource> Add a text page In Glow, this lets you add pages to the course and treats the pages as text and not HTML.
Announcements News Forum (renamed to Announcements as default) In Glow, the News Forum can be used to keep the class posted on important happenings or upcoming events. When you post to the News Forum all students are emailed the information.
Calendar Calendar The calendar in Glow is much more rebust than Blackboard. When an instructor creates an assignment, it automatically makes a calendar event and creates a link to the assignment page.
Glossary Glossary Unlike Blackboard, when an instructor creates an glossary term the system automatically creates hyper-links in the course page to the term definitions.
Folder Resource>Display a Directory There is not really any folders the students would click on in Glow but instructors can make a directory of files for students. The instructor can also make “folders” in the Files section.
Add External Link Resource> Link to file or website This creates a link to a website or lets your upload and link to a file in your Files section.
Tests Quizzes Glow does not use the term tests at all.
 N/A Resource> Add a Label This creates a line of text on your Glow course page. Can be used to identify items or add descriptions/instructions.

Control Panel Administration Block This feature is where the course settings can be changed.
Restore Restore This restores saved content and/or student data.
Move Course Copy In Glow, the Import feature is similar to the move button in Blackboard.
Recycle Reset This option prepares the course for new students by clearing student data.
Course Statistics Reports Glow’s reporting feature is much more robust than Blackboard.
Users Participants/Users These are the students in the course.
Question Pool Question Category Categories are used in Glow to organize all test questions. These categories work much like Pools do in Blackboard.
N/A Scales Scales is a feature in Glow that lets the instructor customize the grading scale for the course.
N/A Files Files in Glow is a directory for the instructors only.
Control panel >Settings Admin Block >Settings In both, settings is where you can make changes to the over all course options.
Enroll User Assign Roles In both, you can enroll students and assign responsibilities such as student, TA, Guest, or Instructor [Teacher].
Roster Participants List of students enrolled in the course
Email Email (sometimes Messages) Glow email works similar to Blackboard and it appears as one of the default blocks.
