Email Setup for Androids

To use the native Google Apps mail, contacts, and calendar apps on your Android, you need to sign in to your college Google account. Instructions below are for users with a Nexus or Google Play edition device running Android 4.2 or higher. If you’re using a different device, your setup instructions may vary.

You only have to do this once.

  1. Touch the Settings > Add account > Google to add your college Google account.

  2. Select Existing.
  3. For username enter your short email address e.g username@williams.edu and your password.
  4. Touch OK to agree to the Terms of Service. This process may take a few minutes.
  5. After completing these steps, you should see “Account sign-in successful”. You can choose which services (Mail and/or Contacts) you want to sync to the device.

That’s it! You can now use Google Apps from your Android. Just launch Gmail, Google Calendar, or whichever app you want to use.

Going forward, you can change which services can sync with Google Apps on your device at any time by going to Settings > Google > touch your account.

  • Send email from this account by default: If you want to use this email account as your primary email account for this device, then place a check in the box.
  • Notify me when email arrives: If automatic email retrieval is set, this option will notify you of new mail. If automatic retrieval is not set this option is moot.
  • Account Name: Choose whatever you’d like to call the account, Williams Email will work.
  • Type your name:  The name you want to appear on your outgoing email “From:”. Your full name will work.
  • Select Done.

Your device should start receiving email.

  • To check email: Press the MENU button, and choose Refresh.
  • To compose email: Press the MENU button, and Compose.
