OIT will be hard at work over the Winter Shutdown performing maintenance and upgrades to prepare for the new year. We have scheduled this to impact the fewest people.
Thursday, December 22nd starting at 5:15 PM we will upgrade the distribution switch for WCMA and Facilities, and a few residence halls, which will cause a 15 minute disconnect from the network.
Friday, December 23rd from 7:20 AM – 9:20 AM we will upgrade the other six distribution switches that feed the rest of campus. Each upgrade takes about 15 minutes and the buildings on that switch will have no network connectivity during that time. From 9:30-10:30 we will be working on core routing, and there will be short network disconnects of less than 1 minute. At noon we will upgrade our Border routers, since they are redundant there should be no network disruption.
Tuesday, December 27th, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM we will upgrade server switches in the data center. Most servers are fully redundant so we do not expect disruption, but some will need their connection re-routed which will cause a 15-30 second network disconnect.
Wednesday, December 28th, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM we will upgrade the firmware in some of our storage arrays. We will shut down the Peoplesoft test and Alumni database servers during this period, but all other systems will remain available.
Many other maintenance activities will be done in addition to those listed above, which will cause no disruptions to the general community. Any that may cause any disruptions specific to certain departments have been coordinated directly with those departments.
This work will NOT affect access to email, calendar, drive or other G-Suite apps (Google Apps for Education) from off-campus.
For more detailed information about the work we will be doing please visit the OIT web page at http://oit.williams.edu and look under announcements.
We do this to help get ready for the upcoming semester and to make sure everything is working well for our community. As always, if this poses an issue for you or your department please contact me as soon as possible, we will help reduce the impact on your work. Thank you,
Director of Networks and Systems
